Robbie Conal has never been your typical political animal. Raised by Siamese cats and communists on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Robbie’s outrage at the misdeeds of political beasts engendered a nationwide guerrilla street–postering movement that not only provided a platform for his own discontent, but a brilliantly satirical outlet for like–minded citizens who've relished the presence of his sardonic posters on the streets of their cities for more than 20 years. This time Robbie turns the satire upon himself, revealing his sometimes twisted, always devoted, life-long infatuation and spirit-bonding with his furry, scaly, and feathery friends in the animal kingdom.
Who knew that throughout the decades of raging against the machine, Robbie covertly detoxified from painting nasty portraits of "ugly old white men in suits and ties” by drawing his and his friends’ cats, dogs and other soothing beasties with whom he shared a deep bond rooted in his early relationship with his Siamese cat god-parents?
Over the years Robbie’s wife, graphic designer Deborah Ross noticed his studio files were overflowing with all sorts of wildlife drawings, and decided to bring them, along with Robbie's warmer, fuzzier side to light in this beautifully designed, full-color book.
In "Not Your Typical Political Animal" Robbie reveals his affectionately skewed take on the remarkable creatures who share this world with us, as well as the human companions who cherish them. Enjoy!

ARTBURN
Yo,
mah bunnies -- the book is done! No big deal,
but we got to slam together 30 of the best ARTBURN's I
made for my monthly column in the LA WEEKLY over the
last 6 years (plus remixes even the WEEKLY wouldn't
print). I love guerrilla postering—actually I’m
addicted—but getting it all together: the art,
high res computer graphics, the offset litho printing,
the glue, brushes, plane tickets, the troops, is a magilla
(a big song and dance number). And I only get up around
4 times a year. Not that I’m complaining, just
getting old. Unfortunately, there are way too many bad
guys and much too little time for that. In 1997 I got
lucky. Sue Horton, then editor of the LA Weekly, Los
Angeles’ premiere free paper, made me an offer
I couldn’t refuse. Do a page, same format as the
posters only 13” x 10”, with about 50 words
of added secondary text (explain yourself!), once a
month. More shots at the big shots—equal opportunity
satire, a chance to get to turn more shit into shiznit:
talk radio pundits (Rush Limbaugh!), schlock culture
mongers (Disney Studios—“Mauschwitz”
to us Angelenos), lifestyle gurus ( Oh Martha!), even
Major League baseball (that John Rocker is a helluva
American). We decided to call the column, “Artburn”,
a pun on the pain in my heart and my so-called profession.
Now my pain can be your pain—coming to a bookstore
near you this summer. All this for a measly $19.95.

Art
Attack: The Midnight Politics Of A Guerrilla Artist
"Art
Attack: The Midnight Politics Of A Guerrilla Artist,"
(Harper Collins)
is a chronicle of our postering adventures from the
very beginning in 1986 up to 1992. It includes photos of each poster, what
happened to it on the streets, and "war stories" -- including PG-13
versions of some of our most outrageous escapeds around the country. It was
designed by my wife, Deborah Ross, and Christina Chang Allen. Dozens
of others contributed photos and anecdotes, and I couldn't have
done it without them. The book is currently out of print, but we're
hoping to raise enough capital to update and reprint it soon.
